My trans-masc son came home from his first year away at uni in the UK. His time away has mostly gone well, but it’s been a big shift for all of us. He came home tired and sometimes grumpy and most often stayed in his room. I asked what he wanted to do and he said, “See the Appalachians!” So we left occupied DC and got a small airbnb in West Virginia. Ended up going to the Skyline Caverns on a whim. All three of us went from hot and irritable to bowled over and ecstatic (and cool thanks to cave temps). The photo the guide took of all three of us is pure magic. That moment together. Pure magic.

Epilepsy mama here, and I’m so sorry you’re in the thick of it. For me, the first seizures were the most terrifying – it will likely only feel easier and less scary after this. My only advice is to fight for what you feel like is an accurate diagnosis – trust your mommy gut. My son had his first seizure, a grand mal (which they now call generalized seizures), at age 10. He had four or five more seizures within that first week. He had a diagnosis within 10 days (we were very lucky that his first diagnosis was the right one), and was effectively medicated right away. He never had another seizure on meds, was weaned off seizure meds two years later, and discharged by his neurologist a year after that after a 100% normal EEG (his previous EEGs being very much NOT normal).

What helped me: time (it took about six months after his first seizure until I didn’t feel legitimately insane with worry), good doctors (bedside manner is soooo important), and finding other epilepsy moms (there always seems to be a friend of a friend who knows someone).
